Kas
was one of the most important cities of Lycia, and
is now a small resort with great historical interest.
Its quaint town centre has a rocky waterfront, with
good beaches nearby. There are watersports available
in the area, like canoeing, jet-skiing, diving and
paragliding, plus cavern diving, which uses technical
equipment to explore the deep and dark caverns.
For those who love travelling on the water, the
Mavi Yolculuk (Blue Voyage) tours, and other excursions
on boats, can be made to the surrounding islands.
White-painted
houses, the cukurbag penisula which extends into
the mediterrian blue through it's large and small
bays, and Meis island which is almost a stones throw
distance from the tip of that peninsula.
That is the view lying beneath your feet when you
look from above just before you enter Kas.
Kas,
a sweet and loveyl holiday town, is one inside the
other with historical remains. Kas was built on
the antique city Antiphellos. Lycia type tomb located
at the beginning of the street, which goes down
to the port and is currently the entertainment and
shopping center of Kas, is like a symbol of Kas.
Antiphellos is known to have regarded as an important
seaport in hellenistic times. And in roman times
it also headed among other cities. Antiphellos was
a member of the lycia union.
The hellenistic theatre is located today in the
west of Kas on the road to the cukurbag peninsula.
It is in a well-preserved condition. And in the
north east of that theatre is located the city's
necropolis. There, a doric grave the most part of
which is engraved in a massive rock is extremely
interesting. The enterance walls are carved with
women figures.
Beaches
in Kas: No beach is avaibable in the city center
of Kas, built on a rocky land. However, you can
have a swim jumping in the sea from terraces placed
on rocks. The water is clean even when it is rough,
but if you are absolutely looking for a beach, you
should go swimming to the bay in the west peninsula
or to beaches of kücükcakil or büyükcakil. The bayindir
port, 1.2 miles away in southheast of Kas, is appropriate
for swimming.
For swimming purposes the kaputas beach between
Kas and Kalkan may also be preferres.
Daily nearby boat tours: You can join boat
tours in order to both have a swim and discover
beauties in the surroudings of Kas and kekova. Boats
departing from the seaport stop by the port of Bayindir,
Kaleköy (Simena), the Kekova island (the sunken
city) and Tersane bay. A break is taken for a meal
on the way or in Kaleköy and for a swim at other
bays in the west of the Tersane or Kekova islands.
Do not forget to have with you a goggles to watch
the sunk city and a suitable pair of shooes to climb
the fortress in Kaleköy and watch around.
If
you wish you can prolong the yacht tour around Kekova
up two or three days. Thus, among your accommodations
will be added the Sicak quay, the Ücagiz quay, the
Theimiussa city, the Asirli island and its bays
around it.
A small blue voyage to be made along with the history
and nature between these places which are too close
to each other but each of which has peculiar characteristics
will engrave on your mind memories which will be
unforgettable for your whole lives.
Diving: The surroundings of Kas is extremly
suitable for diving. A lot of diving schools are
available in Kas for you to learn to dive or dive
under the supervision of a teacher (a diving school
certified by CMAS/PADI is available in
Hotel Kayahan).
Paragliding: You also can take advantage
of the many services for paragliding. Enjoy the
nice view from above over the surroundings and the
bay of Kas.
